Of course shirts are the items you probably own the very most of, and that’s certainly the case for me. So I’m going to break them down into five basic categories of tops. This will give you a clear idea of what shirts will be the most versatile and functional, and then you can choose pieces in those categories that fit your personal style. Ready? Here we go.
I used to think button-ups were too professional-looking, but they’re really a staple that every woman needs to have in her closet. They come in all kinds of colors and materials, but a classic white button-up and a chambray (lightweight denim) button-up are really the only two you need. They are great for layering under a sweater, wearing open over a dress, tied at the waist, tucked into a skirt, or just by themselves with a pair of jeans. A white button-up with jeans is such a classic look for any age or style — so go get yourself one already.
Although button-ups are also considered blouses, I’m talking about other kinds of dressier tops. They’re definitely a category of their own. These are the shirts I own the very most of and are essential for your closet. They can come in a million different varieties and styles, so this is where you can have fun and choose pieces that fit your personality. Choose a variety of blouses — loose and flowy, short-sleeved, long-sleeved, peplum, tunic, etc. These are the best pieces for dressing down with a pair of sandals and boyfriend jeans, or dressing up with a pair of skinny jeans and heels for date night.
Who can live without T-shirts? Not I! They are staples for casual wear, but can also be dressed up with a blazer and heels or paired with a pencil skirt. They’re my favorite. Make sure your closet has at least one solid colored one (my favorites are gray, navy, and white), and you should probably throw a graphic tee into the mix cause they make everything better.
You probably already know this, but sweaters come in all varieties, too. Over-sized, cropped, cable knit, furry, long-sleeved, short-sleeved, and the list goes on. Choose your favorite styles, and buy one of each. They are great for layering over a dress, wearing with a skirt or jeans, or layering over a button-up or a long blouse. I also love them with leather leggings for a pretty mix of edgy and soft.
5. Layering Pieces
These are the completer pieces that every woman also needs in her closet. Cardigans and blazers are my two top choices. I love the look of a blazer thrown over a graphic tee, or a boyfriend cardigan over a flowy blouse. Choose a navy or black blazer that will go with everything and whatever style of cardigan you prefer. I like a long boyfriend cardigan with fitted sleeves, personally.
So, does your closet have all 5 of these essentials??
